16. Egotism
Definition定义:
n. the quality or state of talking too much about oneself and believing that one is more important than others. 自我主义,自高自大
Examples 例:
1. There’s no point arguing with him any more. He is full of egotism.
跟他争已经没有什么意义了,他这人自以为是的很。
2. If your opponent is of choleric temper, try to irritate him. if he is arrogant, try to encourage his egotism. 怒而挠之,卑而骄之…(孙子兵法“始计第一篇”)
egotism有三个音节,第一个音节重读,可以发为[i:],也可以发为[e:]。
egotism派生于名词ego,"自我,本我"。与另一个同源词egoism有差别,egoism指利己主义或自我利益,也就是always thinking about oneself and about what will be the best for oneself, 在这个意义上,egoism接近于selfishness. 而egotism则更侧重于自我评价,即有利的自我评价(favorable self-appraisals),因此当他人的评价过低时,或者害怕别人评价过低时,就可以说threatened egotism,也就是所谓的自我危机,是一种心理状态。因此,有egotism的人,总是言必有我,并将自己的观点、理念强加于他人。区别egotism,可将egotism中的t看成talk,"谈话,谈论",egoism中没有t,因而是行为利己主义的,egotism中有t,因而是言语利己主义的。从下面的例句可以看出egotism的特点:
Egotism resides more in a kind of proud isolation, in a species of contempt for the opinions of others.
自高自大存在于骄傲的孤立中,是一种对他人意见的轻视。
