Shenanigan最早出现在19世纪中期旧金山的报刊上。根据考证，shenanigan极有可能源于爱尔兰语sionnachuighim，直译为英文就是I play the fox或 I play tricks；意思就是“扮狐狸；耍诡计”。这倒是很直截了当，一望便知其意。

　　另有说法称shenanigan源自西班牙语charranada，也是“欺骗；诡计”的意思；还有人认为shenanigan源于一种酒的名字，或者是英国方言等等。
