A group of students at Rome Catholic School are learning howtobecome the future defenders of cyberspace through a pilotprogramthat officials say is the first of its kind in thecountry. The program teaches students about data protection, computernetwork protocols and vulnerabilities, security, firewallsandforensics, data hiding, and infrastructure andwirelesssecurity. Most importantly, officials said, teachers discuss ethicalandlegal considerations in cyber security. Its a great course. Its a littler harder than I expected, saidCatherine Gudaitis, a junior interested in theater. But Iknow inthe world Im going to live in, this will be necessaryinformation, even common knowledge. President Bush made cyber security a focal point in February2003in his National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace, citingtheimportance of safeguarding America from cripplinginternet-basedattacks by terrorists against U.S. power grids, airports and othertargets. The pilot program was developed with help from computer expertsatthe U.S. Air Forces Research Lab in Rome, who four yearsagocreated a 10-week Advanced Course in Engineering CyberSecurityBoot Camp for the militarys Reserve Officers TrainingCorps, saidKamal Jabbour, the labs principal computerengineer. Besides teaching teenagers to protect their digital assets, thecourse opens their imagination to the challenges in cyberspace, andseeks to excite them into a college education incomputerengineering and a professional career in cyber security,Jabboursaid. While computer courses are commonplace in American schools, theRome program is not just a little different. This is astepchange, said Eric Spina, dean of Syracuse Universitysengineeringand computer science programs, which also helped withthe pilotsdevelopment. Spina said the material covered in the course is subjectmatterthat college students -- even engineering and computersciencemajors -- typically dont receive until their junioryear. A high school student with this kind of background would beanasset anywhere they went, Spina said. Although young people are more technologically savvy thanever, they too frequently dabble in high-tech mischief. Romesprogram isan effort to rechannel that native interest, saidPrincipalChristopher Mominey. Thirteen students are enrolled in the 20-week electivecourse, which began with the start of the current semester Jan. 31.Theclass meets for 45 minutes after school four days a week, withtwoof the sessions devoted to lab time, said Ed Nickerson, oneofthree teachers who designed the curriculum. With financial support from Rome Lab and Syracuse University, theschool transformed a one-time home economics classroom intoa12-station wireless computer lab. Nickerson said the students -- sophomores, juniors and seniors--represent a wide spectrum of both academic ability andcomputerknow-how. The school has approximately 400 studentsgradeskindergarten through 12th, and a senior class this year of18. The curriculum will be offered statewide beginning next year.OnFriday, several dozen administrators and educators attendedaworkshop at the Rome school as an introduction. A weeklongcoursewill be offered in August to prepare high school teachers toteachcyber security. If successful, the program could beofferednationwide in 2008, Jabboursaid.(何晓鸿):[双语新闻]抑郁症与心脏病之间存在密切关系[双语新闻]布莱尔要帮英国女孩儿找工作[双语新闻]儿子数学作业难倒贝克汉姆[双语新闻]青少年肥胖与家庭周边环境有关境有关
