Medical experts on the Chinese mainland have found ways in the lab to diagnose SARS. This has made an early diagnosis of SARS possible. They are also researching medicines to prevent the disease. As the pathogen is unknown, the way to finally develop the vaccine is still difficult.

These viruses are named "coronavirus". They are the culprit of the lethal epidemic SARS. 【讲解】 culprit means offender sinner wrongdoer,也就是犯人，罪犯的意思。main culprit:主犯, 罪魁祸首。
lethal epidemic:致命传染病。Lethal means of, relating to, or causing death, fatal.
致命的、死亡的、与死亡有关的，或导致死亡的。A lethal dose:致死(药)量。
map out有两种意思，一是plan or arrange sth:筹划或安排。如 maps out her future career.另一个是present sth in detail.详细提出。如： maps out her idea on the new project。
Despite all this progress, the vital thing is to have a vaccine. And it remains the biggest challenge for scientists worldwide.
【参考译文】 尽管已取得上述进展,但关键还是开发非典疫苗.这对全世界的科学家来说都将是个极大的挑战.
【注解】Challenge 的意思是挑战。this word is used here because developing a vaccine is a test of the scientist's abilities or resources in a demanding but stimulating undertaking.beyond challenge的意思是无与伦比的，无可非议的。
